Manchester City and Chelsea are set to do battle at the Etihad on Monday, a monumental clash that will pit the first-place Citizens against the third-place Blues. Marcelo Brozovic Jersey . City managed to move to the top of the Premier League table by capitalizing on Arsenals 2-2 draw with Southampton on Tuesday, cruising to a 5-1 demolition of Tottenham at White Hart Lane the following day. The Citizens have been in cruise control over the past couple of months, winning its last eight Premier League contests. After suffering defeat at Sunderland on Nov. 10, City has gone on to take a total of 34 points from 12 games. But even in such a rich vein of form, the Citizens only find themselves one point clear of Arsenal at the Premier League summit, and manager Manuel Pellegrini does not think his side deserves to be labeled the title favorites. "I think its too soon to be the favorites - [there are] a lot of matches to play," Pellegrini told the clubs official website after Wednesday defeat of Spurs. "If we continue to play the way we are, we will have chances to win but its early." City boasts an unblemished home record through 11 league matches at the Etihad this term, but Chelsea will be quite motivated to end that spell Monday. Not only did the Blues drop points for the first time in five Premier League outings with a scoreless draw against West Ham on Wednesday, but they can take confidence from their 2-1 win over City at Stamford Bridge in October. Chelsea can lean on its stout defense, which has leaked just three goals in the clubs last eight matches. And with Sergio Aguero, Citys main scoring threat, looking doubtful for Mondays clash, the Blues certainly have a solid opportunity to pick up some valuable road points. Building to Mondays main course is one of Englands fiercest rivalries, taking place at St. James Park in Saturdays early fixture. Newcastle suffered a 2-1 loss at the Stadium of Light earlier in the season, but the Magpies will be hoping to reverse the result when they play host to Sunderland in the latest installment of the Tyne-Wear derby. Manchester United has been rejuvenated by the arrival of Juan Mata, who helped lead the club to a 2-0 defeat of Cardiff City on Tuesday. The Red Devils have taken just two wins from their last four Premier League outings, but the club is hopeful that Mata can bring two successive wins with maximum points at Stoke City on Saturday. Danny Rose, who was harshly sent off in Tottenhams horrific defeat to Manchester City on Wednesday, had his red card rescinded by the English Football Association this week and is available for selection this weekend. Spurs will head to the KC Stadium on Saturday to face a Hull City side that is hoping to snap a four-game slide. Also on Saturday, Fulham will look to avoid a fourth straight defeat when it welcomes Southampton to Craven Cottage, Cardiff City will aim to snap a four- game losing streak when it hosts Norwich City, Aston Villa will attempt to build upon its narrow midweek win with a vital victory over Everton at Goodison Park and West Ham United squares off with Swansea City at Upton Park. On Sunday, Arsenal will look to apply some additional pressure on Chelsea and City by taking three points from its contest with Crystal Palace at the Emirates, and Liverpool heads to the Hawthorns to do battle with West Bromwich Albion. For 90 minutes, Salt Lake combined aggressive offence and relentless defence to limit shots, control possession and set up easy scoring chances. Kyle Beckerman scored two goals, while rookie forward Devon Sandoval and Luis Gil added one apiece, to lead Salt Lake to a 4-0 victory over the Columbus Crew on Saturday night. "This, for me, is the most complete match weve played the entire season," Salt Lake coach Jason Kreis said. The win kept Salt Lake (13-8-6) atop the MLS standings. Gils goal was Salt Lakes 47th of the season, breaking the previous franchise record of 46 set in 2012. Beckerman gave the team No. 48 right before the end of the second half. Columbus (8-12-5) snapped a two-game winning streak, denying Crew coach Robert Warzycha his 71st career win with the team and becoming the clubs all-time leader in coaching victories. "We didnt match their intensity," Warzycha said. "They were first to the ball -- especially in the first half. Even though they only scored one goal, they were much sharper." Much of Salt Lakes scoring frenzy came about because the team practically refused to let Columbus touch the ball for long stretches. Salt Lake controlled possession for 65 per cent of the time through both halves. It allowed the Crew just one shot before halftime and limited them to four total shots. Salt Lake, on the other hand, had 17 total shots and put seven on goal. "Our best defence is when we have the ball," Beckerman said. "If were possessing it well and were creating chances and were getting corner kicks and were keeping them pinned in, then it makes our defence a little bit easier." Still, Salt Lake had little to show for its efforts until the waning moments before halftime. Columbus had a good scoring chance on its lone first-half shot in the 37th minute when Federico Higuain sent in a right footer on an angle toward the right post. Everything changed in the final minute of the half with Beckermans deflected goal, which ended a 230-minute stretch for Columbus without giving up any goals. Javier Morales set things in motion when he bounced a free kick off Will Trapp on the right end of the Crews four-man defensive wall. The ball then ricocheted off Beckermans foot behind the wall and trickled inside the right post to make it 1-0. "It really took a lot of steam out of them to get that goal right before half," Beckerman said. "A lot of teams will come in here and are just going to sit in and try to get 0-0 into halftime and then see if they can sneak something in (later). So to get that was big for us." Salt Lake added to its advantage early in the second half as Sandoval made it 2-0 in the 51st minute when he flicked a cross from Garcia to him inside the 6-yard box inside the left post. Columbus nearly cut into the lead in the 77th when a throw-in from Josh Williams bounced inside the 6-yard box to Ryan Finley. Finley headed the ball toward the right post, but it went just wide. Gil added an insurance goal in the 83rd. Ned Grabavoy flicked a short through ball ahead to him deep in the box. Gil sidestepped a defender and buried the ball down the centre. Beckerman capped the scoring in the 89th when he threaded the ball inside the left post. "They proved tonight why they are in first place," Crew defender Josh Williams said. PHILADELPHIA -- Villanova coach Jay Wright believed his Wildcats had a chance to be good this season, thanks to the players chemistry. http://www.francenationalshop.com/Morgan-Schneiderlin-France-Jersey/ . He just didnt expect them to be this good. Darrun Hilliard scored 19 points to lead No. 6 Villanova to a dominating 77-59 victory over Georgetown on Saturday, preserving the Wildcats hopes of a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. JayVaughn Pinkston added 13 points, and James Bell and Ryan Arcidiacono had 11 apiece for the Wildcats (28-3, 16-2), who won their sixth straight game while tying the 2005-06 team for second-most wins in program history. Villanovas 16 Big East wins are the most in school history. "I dont try to predict our record but if someone forced me to, I never wouldve predicted 28-3," Wright said. Wright said the teams togetherness, which has been evident since preseason workouts in the summer, is a key to the Wildcats success. "Most of your teams that are good get along, but this is a really unique group," Wright said. "I think they are all really similar, and they do look out for each other. Its a pleasure to coach guys who love to play. They love to play together. It was really fun to be a part of that." Said Hilliard, "We just like each other, man. We dont have nothing against each other. Were really like brothers. We like talking with each other and enjoy being around each other, even off the court." The Wildcats team-first mentality showed against the Hoyas, as five players scored in double-figures. Bell entered Saturday averaging a team-best 15 points per game, which is unusually low for a team so highly regarded. "At the offensive end, theyre a very, very unselfish team," Hoyas coach John Thompson III said. "They drive, kick it to the person and that person can make a shot. They have several players on their team who would be the point person, the star on other teams. They have different players who can step up. I think their unselfishness is a key." The 18-point win marked the largest margin of victory for Villanova in a Big East game between the teams. Markel Starks scored 20 points for the Hoyas (17-13, 8-10), who are in jeopardy of failing to make the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2009. DVauntes Smith-Rivera added 14 points and Aaron Bowen had 13 for Georgetown. Georgetown needs a run in the Big East tournament to secure a fifth straight NCAA bid. The Hoyas, who are the No. 7 seed, open the tournament Wednesday night. "Well put all of our energy into getting ready for that first game," Thompson III said. "Well have to play better than we did today, significantly better." Villanova, meantime, is in position for a No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA tournament with a good run in the conference tournament. The Wildcats, who were helped by Kansas loss on Saturday, already have secured the Big East regular-season title and the top seed in the conference tournament. Villanova opens play in the Big East tournament Thursday. The Wildcats likely will field many questions about NCAA tournament seeding in New York, site of the Big East tournament, but Wright said the talk wont affect his players. "I dont think theres that much of a difference with a one and a two (seed)," Wright said. "Being considered up there is great, but its no concern for us. The Big East tournament will be fun." Bell added: "Our focus is always on the next game, the next day and just getting better period. The next day is just the next challenge. The next day is another chance to get better and thats what we have to deal with." Villanova, which led 42-29 at halftime, upped its advantage to 20 points when Arcidiacono made two 3-pointers on consecutive Villanova possessions to give the Wildcats a 55-35 lead with 13:02 remaining. The Hoyas never got it under double-digits the rest of the way. The Wildcats took control with a strong first half. Bells four-point play with 49.8 seconds left in the half gave Villanova its largest lead of the period, 42-27. Bell had 11 points in the half for the Wildcats, who shot 52 per cent from the field and 57 per cent from the arc in the opening 20 minutes. Bowen had nine points before the break to pace Georgetown, which battled foul trouble in the first half. Starks, who entered averaging a team-best 17 points per game, picked up his third foul with 6:40 to play before intermission. Jabril Trawick also had three fouls before the break. There were some hard fouls in this one that was reminiscent of the old Big East when these teams developed a fierce rivalry that has remained with the incarnation of the new basketball-only Big East this season. Smith-Rivera suffered an apparent head injury 43 seconds into the second half and walked groggily to the bench before returning minutes later. Villanovas Dylan Ennis limped off after going down hard with just over seven minutes to play. Neither team allowed the other easy layups in a game that featured 46 fouls. NOTES: It was the 73rd meeting between the teams, and the Hoyas now lead the series 42-31. ... The Wildcats improved to 39-33 all-time at the Wells Fargo Center, Villanovas off-campus home venue. ... Wildcats recruits Phil Booth and Mikal Bridges, who both signed National Letters of Intent with the school for next season, were in attendance. ... Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Pittsburgh Penguins backup goaltender Tomas Vokoun will be out indefinitely after undergoing a procedure to clear up a blood clot in his pelvis. Canada Goose Victoria Parka Sale . Vokoun departed practice on Saturday morning after discovering swelling in his thigh. He was taken to a local hospital where the clot was revealed. The club announced the surgery following a 5-3 exhibition loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets. "The most important thing right now is Tomas health and well-being," Penguins GM Ray Shero said. "The clot was dissolved by the procedure, and the doctors tell us that he will remain in the hospital for several days. We will continue to monitor his progress after that." Etoo gave Jose Mourinhos team a decisive lead from Oscars back pass in the 34th.As most teams hit the midway mark in their season this week, TSNs Jack Armstrong offers his thoughts on some of the players who have stood out to me in the first half. Here are his mid-season NBA awards.  MVP: (KEVIN DURANT-Thunder) - Has been sensational this season and more importantly, the most consistent player in the league. Considering that his team has been without star guard Russell Westbrook and with the free agent departure of sharpshooter Kevin Martin, hes had to carry the majority of the load to not only keep his team afloat but more importantly, at an elite level. Hes delivered on every level. Sure, LeBron James is the best all-around player in the game today yet hes had stretches where he seems to have it on cruise control. Durant brings it for you all the time and for that, I give it to him at the midpoint. ROOKIE: (MICHAEL CARTER WILLIAMS-Sixers) - Simply put, brilliant. His team has been abysmal without him and yet have a decent (considering theyre in tank mode) 12-18 record when he plays. This guy is a better player than he was in college at Syracuse, much like Russell Westbrook at UCLA. He impacts the game on so many fronts its ridiculous. I love watching him play and if I cant catch his game, I make sure I check the boxscores from his games to see his eye-popping stats. I shook my head when they traded Jrue Holiday to the Pelicans on draft night but now I completely understand why they did. Theyve got a major impact guy to run their team for years to come. Special talent. COACH: (JEFF HORNACEK-Suns) - Could have gone with Terry Stotts of the Trail Blazers or Frank Vogel of the Pacers here but who figured the Suns would be this good this year? No one. They were one of the teams in the discussion as being in full tank mode yet a funny thing happened on the way to the lottery. This team plays really hard. Wonderful decision to team the two point guards together (Dragic and Bledsoe). They play with energy and a purpose. Outstanding role definition and they share the ball. To me, the coaching has been a major factor bringing it all together nicely. The injury to Eric BBledsoe is a major blow and Im not sure if they can hold on to a playoff spot but at this point, youve got to give major props to Hornacek and his staff for a job well done. Canada Goose Sale Outlet. DEFENCE: (ROY HIBBERT-Pacers) - All he does every night is block and alter shots and make you think twice and a third time about bringing your game into the lane. On top of that, he rebounds and is a physical force in the paint. The Pacers are the leagues best defensive team and a huge reason is the fact that they have outstanding rim protection and it all starts with this man. Offensively, hes become a much more polished player as well. He said his goal was to be the top defender in the league and in my book, hes it. MOST IMPROVED: (LANCE STEPHENSON-Pacers) - This second round pick has continued to get better and better. He had a lot of rough edges to his game and his personality coming out of Cincinnati but to his credit, hes slowly but surely emerged as a significant part of the attack of the leagues top team. He can score, rebound, pass and guard for you. Plays with great passion and intensity and has slowed his game down and now plays at a controlled speed with a purpose. Will get a nice raise this off-season. Well earned and well deserved. RAPTORS MVP: (KYLE LOWRY) - No doubt about this pick. Hes been a constant with his leadership, defence and clutch play. Has major league competitive spirit in his personality and zero back-down as well. Give him credit, hes in the best shape of his career (I love guys in their contract year, its amazing how it happens like this so often) and it shows in his game. His ability to get in the lane and create for teammates has grown nicely along with his consistency with the 3-point shot which makes him a greater force in the screen-and-roll game. Ultimately, you watch this team this year and his personality and will to win and pay the price has made this an enjoyable first half of the season for Raptors fans. Yes, there have been plenty of bumps in the road but when you think of Lowry, hes been a major bright spot. Good for him, hes paid the price and gives it to you consistently. We will continue to monitor his progress after that." The 37-year-old native of the Czech Republic was 13-4-0 with a 2.45 goals- against average and three shutouts last season, going 6-5 with a 2.10 GAA during the postseason, which ended in a four-game sweep to the Boston Bruins in the Eastern Conference finals. Pittsburgh has one other goaltender on its roster besides starter Marc-Andre Fleury -- Jeff Zatkoff -- while Eric Hartzell had been assigned to Wilkes- Barre/Scranton of the AHL. Vokoun also missed the end of the 2005-06 season and the entire postseason, when he was the starter in Nashville, due to blood clots in his abdomen. LONDON -- Chelsea has posted annual losses of more than $80 million but the Premier League club remains confident of complying with UEFAs Financial Fair Play rules. North Face Jacket Mens Sale . The club slipped back into the red a year after making a profit for the first time since Russian billionaire owner Roman Abramovichs takeover in 2003. Chelsea lost 49.4 million pounds ($81.7 million) in the year to June 30, after making a profit of 1.4 million pounds ($2.3 million) in 2011-12. But UEFA, the governing body for European football, allows unlimited investment on infrastructure and youth development, which Chelsea believes accounted for around 15 million pounds ($25 million) in spending in 2012-13. UEFA is allowing losses of up to 45 million euros ($62 million) in the first FFP monitoring period -- 2011-2013 -- without the risk of being barred from European competitions. UEFA wants clubs to move toward breaking even on their football-related activities, and will be preparing in March and April to punish the first clubs for FFP breaches. "We will meet the stipulations set down by UEFA in their first assessment period," Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck said Tuesday in a statement giving a partial breakdown of financial results. "And by our own analysis we are progressing from a commercial viewpoint as well as continuing to add trophies to our collection, which we never lose sight of as our most important goal." The 2011-12 profit of 1.4 million pounds ($2.3 million) came on the back of generating around 90 million pounds ($149 million) from the transfer market and a successful Champions League campaign. But Chelseas UEFA income was hit despite winning the Europa League in May because the team was knocked out of the more lucrative Champions League at the group stage. So, although Chelsea posted a record turnover of 255.8 million pounds ($423 million) in 2012-13, it only rose by 100,000 pounds ($165,500). But commercial income grew 20 per cent year-on-year to 79.6 million pounds ($132 million), and there should be a more significant uplift in 2013-14 when the first year of a 300 million-pound ($497-million), 10-year contract extension with kit maker Adidas kicks in. Chelsea has also advanced beyond the Champions League group stage this season and is third in the Premier League, two points behind leader Arsenal. "For Chelsea FC to achieve a record level of turnover despite our first group-stage elimination from the Champions League shows we have structured our business and are growing in the correct way for long-term stability," chief executive Ron Gourlay said. "Our philosophy is we build upon success on the pitch and although in these financial results we havent repeated the sizeable profits made the previous year from player transfers, we believe the age profile of the existing squad means we will benefit from that investment for many years to come." COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Johnny Football and No. Vincent Janssen Hotspur Shirts . 10 Texas A&Ms offence dominated as usual against SMU. The difference on Saturday night was that the Aggies defence was solid, too. Johnny Manziel accounted for 346 yards with three touchdowns in just more than a half to help Texas A&M cruise to a 42-13 win over SMU. Texas A&M (3-1) was up 32-6 at halftime, and Manziel led the Aggies to a touchdown on their first drive of the third quarter before the Heisman Trophy winner went to the bench. The defence, which struggled as it dealt with suspensions early this season, had given up 36 points a game through the first three games. Defensive co-ordinator Mark Snyder made some personnel changes this week to help the Aggies improve. "Weve still got some areas weve got to work on, but a much better game from our side of the ball," Snyder said. "Were still a work in progress, for sure, but as long as I keep seeing improvement each week I think well be fine." It was a nice bounce-back game for Texas A&M after falling to top-ranked Alabama 49-42 last week. "I think we learned some valuable lessons a week ago," A&M coach Kevin Sumlin said. "I think we can get a little bit more confidence coming out of this game with our defence." Manziel had 244 yards passing with a touchdown and ran for 102 yards and two more scores. "We tried a little of everything," SMU coach June Jones said of trying to slow Manziel. "Hes an amazing player. You blitz him and hes accurate with the ball. You rush three, and he can scramble around and make it last forever. Hes a great college football player and hes in the perfect system." The Aggies have scored at least 40 points in each of their first four games for the first time in school history. Deshazor Everett returned a fumble 12 yards for a touchdown, and Ben Malena ran for 71 yards and two scores. He got things going for A&M with a 3-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Former Texas quarterback Garrett Gilbert threw for 310 yards and a touchdown with an interception for SMU (1-2). Despite the lopsided score, Texas A&Ms performance was far from flawless.
